5-Day Horse Trips

Our 5 day Tonquin Valley backcountry riding adventure is the ultimate Rocky Mountain experience. We cover endless terrain on horseback, foot & by water.

Departure Point

We meet at 8:30 a.m. at Portal Creek. Go south on highway 93 from Jasper 7.5 km to the junction with the 93A highway.

Turn right onto the 93A and follow south for 2.5 km to the junction with the Marmot Basin ski area road. Follow the Marmot Basin road for 6.5 km to the point where it crosses Portal Creek. Park in the parking lot on the left side of the road south of the creek.

Day 1

We meet at the Portal Creek Trailhead at 8:30 a.m. Please see "Map To Our Location" for more details.

Guest departure is at approximately 9:00 a.m.

Pack horses with luggage depart shortly after guests.

Lunch break is approximately 30 minutes. Our lunch spot is the half way mark of our ride into the Tonquin Valley.

Arrival at the lodge is mid afternoon.

Fresh, home baked cinnamon buns, a variety of sweets, as well as, hot coffee and tea will be waiting for you!

Camp orientation/tour while you wait for your luggage to arrive is also available.

Settle into cabin.

Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m.

Our dinners are all home cooked and will satisfy all who partake.

Please note: We are able to cater to those who have food allergies but we must be informed at the time of your reservation.


Many of our guests will venture outdoors after dinner. Customer favorites are fishing, going for a rowboat ride, venturing out in a canoe, going for a walk, reading a great book on the deck of their cabin, sitting by the campfire, or possibly playing a game of horseshoes or cards.

We always have coffee and hot water ready for all our guests. We ensure there are always an adequate amount of snacks and juice on the table for you as well.



Day 2

Breakfast is served at 8:00 a.m.

Breakfast will vary each morning. A typical breakfast includes eggs, bacon or sausage, fresh baked goods (muffins, biscuits, etc.), pancakes or French toast, and fresh fruit platter with coffee and tea.

Customers will be given a packed lunch as most guests are planning to be outdoors. Guests are also welcome to bring their lunch into the lodge and eat.

A packed lunch includes: a choice of 1 or 2 fresh buns with toppings, cookies, and fruit.

Day ride leaves at 10:00 a.m.
Those riders who would like to participate in the day ride will be asked during breakfast if they would like to day ride. You are required to decide by the end of breakfast as the staff needs time to prepare the horses for the day.

Please note that 2 of the 3 days in the Tonquin, riders will have the option to ride. One day each trip is reserved for the horses to have a day off.

Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m.


Day 3

Breakfast at 8:00 a.m.

Horses day off!! No day ride!

Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m.

Day 4

Breakfast at 8:00 a.m.

Day ride leaves at 10:00 a.m.

Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m.

Day 5

Day 5 we depart back to Portal Creek Trailhead. We ask that all customers have their bags packed and brought up to our tack shed before they go for breakfast.

Wranglers will be preparing the horses for departure while guests eat breakfast.

Breakfast at 8:00 a.m.

Pack horses will leave with luggage at 9:00 a.m.

Guests depart at approximately 9:15 a.m.

Lunch break will be at the same location as the ride into the Tonquin Valley.

We aim to arrive at the trailhead between 2:30-3:00 p.m.
